oday’s visit to Shenzhen was very interesting in many ways. Not only did it differ from Hong Kong in terms of systems and all that, but the lifestyle and the culture was a lot different between two cities. However, it is not like either side is the “correct” side of the border like the East and the West Berlin. People tend to believe it is like so as China is seen as an oppressive state while Hong Kong is seen as the resistance towards such ideas, it is not that straightforward. For example, the numerous CCTV systems sounds a bit creepy or scary to us, but the local expats of Japan has explained that it is very secure and it’s no big deal if you don’t mess up yourself. The automated shops sounds a bit “untasteful, unhuman”, but in reality it’s rather just cutting the unnecessary process. There were many parts in China where we tend to have a negative image, but I got to realise that there’s other side of the story, especially from the actual users. I think today was the best possible example of “seeing is believing”

Hong Kong Fieldwork Day 3 (3/12/2019) Journal(Diocesan Boys School を訪問した後の感想)IMG_5823

In our group, we discussed about development and its relations to environment, traditional culture, etc. For environment, I learned that Hong Kong has a severe garbage problem because the landfills in Hong Kong are almost full. Recently, the Hong Kong government has started working on reducing the garbage, by thinking about making a facility to burn the garbage. I thought this related to garbage reduction problem in some parts of Japan. For example, garbage-burning facilities do not exist in Koganei city in Tokyo. As a solution, the city is planning to make one together with another city. One thing that I noticed is that one student identified himself as a “Hong Kong” citizen, while another thought he is Chinese. From this, I thought the way they identified themselves were different because the way they saw Hong Kong differs.
